BV BOTTLE CLUB

The BV Bottle Club 2.0 (memberships 61-100) has shifted its fundraising focus to another cause dear to our hearts. At least half of the membership dollars now raised from memberships 61-100 will be another source of funds for our Bon Vivants Scholarship at ScholarMatch. ScholarMatch helps make college possible for first generation college students with services from application to graduation.

It is ever more clear that, as a community, we need to redouble our efforts to create a more racially just and equitable society. Accordingly we are pleased to announce that we have adjusted the criteria for our next Bon Vivants Scholarship to promote racial and social equity through the power of  a college education. Starte with the award in 2021, The Bon Vivants Scholarship will be granted to a young black student residing or attending school in San Francisco. More info at www.scholarmatch.org/bonvivants

The BV Bottle Club was started as a fundraiser for the bars and the teams of Bon Voyage! & Trick Dog. From memberships 1-60, we contributed $30k to the former employees of each bar through their respective gofundme pages (the other half is to buy you more special bottles). During the time of indefinite closure caused by COVID-19 “shelter-in-place” mandates, the money from those memberships was additional support to help them cover basic living costs of healthcare, food, and their homes.

Private Selection Single Barrels have become a special part of our bars offerings. Chosen by our teams during visits to Kentucky, our first three private selection single barrels of whiskey had enough stock to offer 100 memberships and still keep bottles to serve at the bar. Our fourth bottle is a 2020 special project just for the club. You can read about each whiskey below. We will continue to grow our library by acquiring extraordinary private selection barrels of other types of aged spirits. Ordinarily, these would only be available to sip at the bars. But now, we offer them to enjoy at home as a part of this club membership.

HERE’S THE FIRST THREE BOTTLES

Maker’s Mark Private Select. SB (108.9 proof) - For this bottling, Trick Dog teamed up with the Silver Dollar in Louisville, KY to create our second joint ‘Trick Dollar’ barrel. Maker’s Mark Private Select barrel program is a unique experience. Each Private Select barrel starts as a fully matured Maker’s Mark at cask strength. We chose ten staves to add, and we laid it to finish in Maker’s Mark limestone cellar for nine extra weeks.

We finished our Maker’s Mark Private Select barrel with one Seared French Cuvee stave, one Toasted French Spice stave, and eight Maker’s 46 staves. Each stave varies in its cut, toast, and flavor profile – each bringing a unique perspective in relation to, and independent of, each other. We believe this barreling is both an homage to our mutual love for Maker’s 46 and a satisfying transformation. At 108.9 proof, we recommend sipping it on its own, with a little bit of water, or on a big cube.

Larceny Bourbon, SB Barreled 3/13/13 (92 Proof) - Larceny! Oh, what a storied history! Named for the notorious treasury agent, and keeper of the rickhouse keys, John E. Fitzgerald, Larceny pays tribute to Fitzgerald’s discerning palate for the best whiskeys (and his addition of these whiskeys to his personal collection). His notorious selection of the best barrels led to rickhouse workers calling a lightweight barrel a “Fitzgerald” barrel. We can only imagine that he would be eager to sip this wheated bourbon.

In our selection process, we tasted through five barrels. We winnowed our selections down to two and the committee was split. So, we put them to the test: which barrel made a better Old Fashioned? In our opinion, the bottle before you tastes best not only on its own, but also make a damn good Old Fashioned.

Mellow Corn, SB Bottled in Bond (100 Proof) - Mellow Corn’s cult-like following within the industry is not without merit. With its unique regulations ranging from a minimum 80% corn mash bill to four years of aging in used Heaven Hill barrels, Mellow Corn provides a delightful diversity to other Bottled-in-Bond whiskeys.

When we were given the opportunity to choose our own barrel, who could say no?! You won’t find another bottle of Mellow Corn like this – Heaven Hill has since discontinued the release of single barrel Mellow Corn. This whiskey, in our opinion, pairs best alongside a light lager (Budweiser is our favorite).

Quik Dog Exclusive Westward Whiskey, American Single Malt “Hungarian Heads,” Single Barrel, Barreled 3/3/17, Bottled 12/2/20 (100 proof)

WOW! What a special bottle. When it became clear that the pandemic would last longer than we could have anticipated, we decided we needed a special whiskey project to keep our spirits high and your thirsts quenched. So we reached out to a good friend, told her about the club, and described what we were looking for. Basically, we wanted whiskey that wasn’t available, doesn’t exist, was experimental, or was lost in the corner of the distillery. Quickly, an amazing virtual tasting ensued after receiving a few small sharpie-marked bottles in the mail. All of the whiskeys we tasted fit the bill.

But this one was a clear standout to us!
Westward Distiller Miles Munroe shared, “We made this because we wanted to experiment a bit with wine & Cognac barrel techniques. There's one barrel of American oak toasted heads and one barrel of Hungarian oak toasted heads. This is the ONLY barrel we've made like this ever.”

“haha, and yeah sometimes in the process of hiding barrels from the company I lose them on myself and this one got more great age on it because it was lost in the shuffle.”

“Hungarian oak is known for producing mellow, herbaceous tannins with rich aromatics. Our cooperage toasted this oak and made the heads of a whiskey barrel, with American white oak for the staves.”

Tasting Notes

This whiskey shines with full bodied flavors of ripe, black fruit and spice from the Cabernet Sauvignon. The color has hints of dark amber, and the aroma has highlights of cassis, buttered toast, cinnamon, and maple syrup.

Trick Dog Exclusive J. Rieger Co, Kansas City Whiskey finished in a Grgich Hills Cabernet Cask. (95 proof)

We are so stoked with this bottle. As was the case with our last bottle, we were excited to reach out to a small distillery we had a personal connection to. That effort led to great conversations with J. RIeger Co in Kansas City.

Late in the Fall of 2021 J. Rieger Co acquired one single spen barrel from the storied Grgich Hills Winery in Napa Valley. That gorgeous 59 Gallon French Oak cask had previously been used to make the bold, dark, and deeply colored Cabernet Sauvignon that Napa is so well known for. They filled the barrel with their Kansas City Whiskey on November 22, 2021 and it had been resting ever since.

About J. Rieger & Co. - Their Kansas City Whiskey pays tribute to their historic brand through the resurrection of the addition of sherry to American Whiskey, a common practice in the late 1800’s but lost after Prohibition. It is their goal to showcase the extraordinary quality of American Whiskey in their blend, while introducing a classic element in the production process. As the first producer to revitalize the practice of adding Sherry into whiskey, they’ve created and entirely new category of American Whiskey, Kansas City Style

Straight Bourbon, Straight Rye, and Light Corn Whiskey, all aged a minimum of 4 years plus 15 year old Oloroso Sherry from WIlliams & Humbert in Jerez, Spain
